What is the procedure text?

Procedure text is a kind of text that shows how to do something or how to make something.

Teks prosedur adalah sejenis teks yang menunjukkan bagaimana membuat sesuatu atau bagaimana melakukan sesuatu.

Types of procedure text

There are two types that you are going to study:

Manual

Tips

A text that explains how things should be done in order.

Sebuah teks yang menjelaskan bagaimana sesuatu harus dilakukan secara berurutan.

A small piece of advice about something practical.

Sebuah saran tentang sesuatu hal yang berguna/mudah dilakukan.

Social function

Social the function of the procedure text is to describe something is completely done or made through a sequence of steps.

Fungsi sosial dari teks prosedur adalah untuk menjelaskan bagaimana sesuatu sepenuhnya dilakukan atau dibuat melalui serangkaian langkah.

Generic Structure

There are three general parts:

Goal

Tujuan

The purpose of how to do or make something.

For example:

How to withdraw money from an ATM

Materials

Bahan/Alat

The elements we need to do or make something.

For example:

Tools and materials: ATM, ATM card, scissors, paper.

Ingredients: garlic, shallots, chilies, eggs. (recipe)

Steps

Cara/Langkah-langkah

The actions that must be done.

For example:

Enter the withdrawal amount.

Select the Type of Account.

*) Manual and tips procedure text, materials are not required/written. We need only Goal and Steps. We need materials for recipe procedure text or how to cook something.

Untuk teks prosedur manual dan tips, bahan/alat tidak diperlukan/ditulis. Kita perlu tujuan dan langkah-langkah saja. Kita membutuhkan bahan untuk teks prosedur resep atau bagaimana memasak sesuatu.

Language features

Procedure text uses:

Adverbs of Sequence	Keterangan urutan For instance: First (pertama), Second (kedua), After that (Setelah itu), Next/Then (kemudian), Finally/Lastly (terakhir).
Adverb of Time	Keterangan waktu For instance: 2-3 minutes, 15 seconds, etc.
Action verbs	Kata kerja aktif dalam Verb-1 For instance: Enter (masukan), Select (pilih), Confirm (konfirmasi), etc.
Imperatives	Kalimat perintah For instance: Enter the withdrawal amount. (Masukkan nominal penarikan). Select the Type of Account. (Pilih sumber dana).

Example of Manual

Goal:

How to withdraw money from an ATM

Steps:

First, insert ATM card.

Second, select the language.

Third, enter 6-digit ATM pin.

Fourth, select the type of transaction.

After that, enter the withdrawal amount.

Next, select the type of account.

Then, confirm receipt, Yes or Not.

Finally, collect the cash.

Lastly, confirm transaction completion.

Steps:

1) Be cautious at ATMs

Avoid facilities in dark or remote places. If you see people lurking around the ATM or see anything else that makes you uncomfortable, find another ATM and report the situation to the police. Whenever possible, take another person with you.

2) Be efficient

Have your card ready when you approach the ATM. Block the view of others by standing between the terminal and any person who is waiting, or cup your hand over the keypad as you enter your personal identification number (PIN).

3) Prevent debit card fraud

Memorize your PIN. Don’t tell anyone your PIN or account number and never loan anyone your card. Never write your PIN on your card or anything you carry with or near your card. Report lost or stolen cards immediately.

4) Take care of your card

Treat your card as if it were cash. Protect your card by not exposing the magnetic stripe to other magnetic objects that can erase your card.

GRAMMAR FOCUS

A. IMPERATIVE

Imperative is a verb which is used to give command, warning, advice, instruction, or request.

Imperative adalah verb (kata kerja) yang digunakan untuk memberikan command (perintah), warning (peringatan), advice (nasehat), instruction (instruksi/petunjuk), maupun request (permintaan).

RULES

Use bare infinitive (without “to”).

Menggunakan kata kerja infinitive (tanpa “to”)

Come in! (Masuklah!)

Be careful! (Berhati-hatilah!)

Not need a subject.

Tidak membutuhkan sebuah subjek

Close the door!

(Tutup pintu!)

More polite with adding the word “do”.

Lebih sopan menambahkan kata “do”

Negative form with adding “don’t” or “doesn’t”.

Bentuk negative dengan menambahkan “don’t” or “doesn’t”

B. SENTENCE CONNECTORS

Sentence connectors used for telling actions in order (showing someone how to do something or to make things or showing the order of instruction).

Penghubung kalimat digunakan untuk menceritakan tindakan secara berurutan (menunjukkan kepada seseorang bagaimana melakukan sesuatu atau membuat sesuatu atau menunjukkan urutan instruksi).

C. ADVERBS

Adverb is a word that functions to describe a verb (verb), adjective (adjective), or other adverbs.

Adverb adalah kata yang berfungsi untuk mendeskripsikan verb (kata kerja), adjective (kata sifat), atau adverb lain.

FUNCTIONS
Mendeskripsikan verb	I have done completely* my job.* (Saya telah menyelesaikan seluruh pekerjaan saya.)
Mendeskripsikan adjective	She speak English good enough. (Dia berbicara Bahasa Inggris cukup baik.)
